motored bikcyles on New Castle causeway

Wanderlust at Strawbery Banke is the perfect place to begin a self guided tour down the Piscataqua River towards New Castle Island on Route 1B.  Our first suggested stop is nearly 2.5 miles down the river to the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse overseeing the mouth of the Piscataqua.  Here you can explore Fort Constitution, originally known as Fort William and Mary, where on the nights December 14 and 15 of 1774, the Sons of Liberty stormed the British fort and captured 16 light cannon and 97 barrels of gunpowder, some of which later made its way to the Battle of Bunker Hill in June, 1775.  There is also local access to New Castle Beach and Great Island Common Beach and and since you are on a bike, you avoid the parking fee's to access these beaches.
